Greetings all. We live in Southern Colorado and we have 2 Swedish blue ducks. One is 3 years old and the other is 6 months old. We chose the Swedish blue duck because there heartiest breed we found to hold up in the Colorado winters and summers. We choose our Brahma chickens for the same reason. We have 15 chickens and 2 ducks. They all get along together as a flock. No infighting.
The ducks themselves have interesting personalities. Priscilla, our 3 year old is very friendly and very talkative with her quacks. She lays down in the grass waiting for us to come pet her, but it has to be when she is in the mood. Our 6 month old duck is still leary of us but she’s getting better at interaction. We have raised our chickens and ducks together, the ducks even prefer to sleep in the coop with the chickens. They all go in the coop when the sun goes down. All in all I would recommend the Swedish blue duck and the brahma chickens as coop mates. One caveat, the Swedish blue can be a little noisy. Fortunately we have understanding neighbors cause we live in town. So all our neighbors received complimentary eggs often. So far no complaints in 3 years.
