Description
Golden Sebright Bantam Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Golden Sebright Bantam chicken is a true bantam with golden laced feathering, a proud pose, and a spirited personality. If you want a small show bird with a fancy look and plenty of character, this breed is a classic choice.
Sebrights were developed in England in the early 1800s by Sir John Saunders Sebright. Oklahoma State University notes that Sir John spent about 20 years developing a small bantam with laced plumage, using breeds such as Nankin, Rosecomb, native bantams, and Polish-type birds in the process.
Unlike bantams that are miniature versions of large breeds, Sebrights are true bantams. That means there is no standard-size version of the breed. The Livestock Conservancy also notes that Sebrights entered both the Poultry Club of Great Britain Standard and the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1874.
Appearance and Characteristics
Golden Sebright Bantams have rich golden feathers edged in black lacing. That crisp laced pattern gives them a polished, showy look that stands out in any bantam flock.
One of their most unusual traits is that the males do not have long sickle feathers in the tail. In fact, Sebright males are hen-feathered, meaning they do not grow the pointed hackle, saddle, and sickle feathers found on most roosters. This trait gives both males and females a similar feather shape and helps create the breed’s neat, rounded appearance.
These bantams are small, alert, and stylish. They love to pose, and their spirited nature makes them especially fun for customers who enjoy lively ornamental birds.
Golden Sebright vs Silver Sebright
Golden Sebrights and Silver Sebrights belong to the same true bantam breed. The main difference is color.
Choose Golden Sebright Bantams if you want warm gold feathers with black lacing. Choose Silver Sebright Bantams if you prefer a cooler white-silver base color with black lacing.
Both varieties are small, ornamental, spirited, and showy. Also, both are true bantams, so neither has a standard-size version.
True Bantam vs Miniature Bantam
The Golden Sebright is a true bantam. It was not bred down from a larger standard chicken.
That makes Sebrights different from bantams such as Barred Rock Bantams, Cochin Bantams, or Wyandotte Bantams, which are miniature versions of standard-size breeds. With Sebrights, the small size is the breed.
Because they are small, they need less room and feed than large chickens. However, they still need secure housing, predator protection, clean water, balanced feed, dry bedding, and enough space to move comfortably.
Egg Production and Utility
Golden Sebright Bantams may lay small cream or white bantam eggs, but they are not production layers. Most customers choose them for beauty, show quality, personality, and ornamental value.
Sebright hens do not usually go broody, and they are not the best choice for customers who want natural hatching. In addition, several poultry sources note that Sebrights can be more challenging to raise than some hardier bantams. For that reason, they may appeal most to customers who enjoy show birds and ornamental bantams rather than simple egg production.
If your main goal is a full egg basket, choose a standard-size egg layer. However, if you want a small, fancy bantam that looks sharp in the show pen, the Golden Sebright is a beautiful option.
Temperament and Suitability
Golden Sebright Bantams are spirited, alert, and full of personality. They are not dull little birds. Instead, they move with confidence and often seem to enjoy showing off.
They can make enjoyable backyard birds for keepers who like active bantams. Because they are small and can fly well, a secure or covered run is helpful. Predator protection is especially important for bantams since hawks, cats, raccoons, and other predators can pose a bigger risk to small chickens.
Cackle Hatchery® added new bloodline from Matt Haehn in 2011 to help bring the size down while still keeping chicks strong enough to ship well. That balance matters because breeders cannot select them too small without affecting shipping strength and chick quality.
Show and Exhibition Notes
Golden Sebright Bantams are a strong choice for customers interested in show poultry. Their laced feathering, true bantam size, rose comb, and hen-feathered males make them one of the most distinctive bantams in the showroom.
The breed has a long exhibition history. The Livestock Conservancy states that Sebrights entered the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1874, and Wikipedia’s breed summary also describes Sebrights as one of the oldest recorded British bantam breeds.
For show projects, focus on feather lacing, body type, condition, comb, leg color, size, and overall presentation. Clean housing and careful handling can help these small birds look their best.

Breed History and Preservation
Sir John Saunders Sebright developed the Sebright in England during the early 1800s. His goal was to create a very small ornamental bantam with precise laced feathering. As a result, the Sebright became one of the earliest and most famous true bantam breeds.
The breed also has a unique place in poultry history because Sir John Sebright founded a specialist breed club for it. Several sources describe the Sebright Bantam Club, formed around 1810, as the first single-breed poultry club.
Today, Golden Sebrights remain popular with show poultry keepers and bantam enthusiasts. Their small size, bold lacing, and hen-feathered males make them unlike almost any other chicken breed.

The Golden Sebright Bantam entered the American Poultry Standard of Perfection in 1874. Cackle Hatchery® offers Golden Sebright Bantam chicks during chick season, and the current product listing shows active seasonal hatch information.

I ordered five Golden Sebrights. I received seven- very nice.
Shipping was very fast, the box was very secure, and all birds arrived safely and were healthy.
The birds are now three months old, and there have been no losses or problems whatsoever. The birds seem to be of good quality.
Out of seven birds, I ended up with one poullet and six cockerels.
They are very friendly and will be all over me in minutes, if I crouch near them. They seem intelligent and feisty, as well as beautiful and cute.
I highly recommend Cackle Hatchery as a choice for this breed, if you are choosing between hatcheries.
Good luck!

We ordered 5 Golden Sebrights along with some other bantam breeds, and all 5 (plus 2 extra!) arrived alive and healthy within 24 hours of shipping! They have grown into beautiful birds with the most curious personalities. I would highly recommend this breed of chicken from Cackle Hatchery.
Rod MacQuarrie –
We ordered 5 chicks, they sent 6. Four (4) ended up being pullets so we had to rehome the roosters. One rooster had crooked toes from birth. They are very hardy birds, and their feathering is near perfect, with no black splotches like other Sebright bantams we purchased from a local Tractor Supply store a couple years ago. The only difference I noticed is their eyes are not as black as the ones from Tractor Supply. The breed is a bit flighty, but able to easily fly away from hawks. We’ve had them fly up into the tops of trees 40 feet tall to escape hawks, but they fly down again for treats. These are wonderful birds. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy from Cackle Hatchery again.

Excellent, all the chicks arrived in perfect condition and I received 3 extra.

Cackle has been my “go to” hatchery for the past few years for good reason. The Sebrights are no exception to the rule here. The Golden Sebrights are pretty little bantams with a pretty mild nature once they are handled. Cackle’s birds came in with a large order in May and they have grown out to be exceptional birds. The colors and comb seem to pop among the other birds at the farm.

Beautiful but shy
I ordered 3 kinds of bantams this spring — Buff Orpingtons, Old English Game Bantams, and Sebrights. The Sebrights are beautiful but shy. I raised them the same as the other 2 kinds but they will not let me pick them up. They will eat treats out of my hands, though. The roosters crow A LOT, I don’t know if that’s a trait of the breed or if they’re compensating for something 😉 Thank you Cackle Hatchery for such beautiful, healthy birds.

Great service
Golden sebrights, Red Pyles & Gold Duckwings. Great experience with my first ever endeavor of ordering chicks. Taylor was very helpful & accommodating when I needed to postpone my order due to health issue. Chicks arrived in good condition & happy to get out of box!! I would not hesitate to order from Cackle again.

excellent
Ordered 15 Sebright bantams and I received 17 (thanks Cackle) peeps traveled 2 days and were in great shape upon arrival. 4 days later all 17 are thriving, I had my doubts about 2 day shipping, as I have always ordered close for next day drop. Pleased to say all went well and would order again from Cackle.

Thanks
Everything went perfectly. We ordered 28 chicks from different varieties & got 35 total. Shipped on May 26 & got here on the 28th. I was so worried the post office would mess things up. They never called me but thanks to Cackle’s system, I got the tracking # & monitored the shipment. They all arrived perfectly fine chirping like crazy & moving around. I followed their instructions & all were doing great til Saturday when 1 of the porcelain duccles died overnight. For such a long journey I am extremely & pleasantly surprised. We ordered 5 of these golden sebrights & got 1 extra. Very pleased with the way the company works. Thank you so much.Highly recommend.

Sebrights arrived well
I received my Sebrights along with 2 additional breeds. They all arrived well. It was a cold morning so I hurried them to the house and under the lights. I live close to the post office, so I clicked on my lights in this nice large brooder hubby just made for me, just as I was leaving the house. All chicks immediately ate and drank. Then they seemed to be weakening. I then realized my heat was escaping and temp was about 95. For these little birds, 105 is important. I used some blankets over most of the top wire to keep heat in and a heating pad on low. This brought the temp up to 105 and all the babies were happy and survived. The temp is so important. 105 the first day or two. Love the babies. They are now three weeks old and doing great.

Beautiful but aggressive
They are beautiful, but very skiddish even though handled since chicks. The hens are docile but the roosters attack everything, me, my dog, the cat. They don’t know how little they are. They can’t hurt anything but boy are they noisy and feisty in comparison to several other breeds I have.

Arrived happy & clean
I ordered 5 Golden Sebrights, received 6 chirping, clean bottomed, took to drinking & eating right away. Very pleased on Day One.
