Description

The English Orpington is the creation of Britain’s William Cook. In the 1800s he set out to develop a winter hardy breed that is outstanding for both eggs and meat. His original color variety was the Black English Orpington chicken. The breed name derives from the town of Orpington in Kent, England.
The English Orpington has a broad body, short back, small head with a medium size single comb, and a low stance. The hens are fair layers of medium size eggs with tinted shells. Broodiness is variable.
English Orpingtons are not yet recognized by the American Poultry Association. They have a rounder appearance than American (standard) Orpingtons, thanks to their looser plumage. Their backs are also shorter, as are their legs.
Our Cackle Hatchery® Black English Orpington Chickens are 100% English stock. They are extremely winter hardy, thanks to their loose plumage, and they also tolerate summer heat.
The Black English Orpington has an unusually gentle temperament that makes it incredibly easy to socialize. This breed is an excellent choice for backyard pets, especially for a family with small children.
